Apple Mac Pro’s Future in Doubt as Growth is “Largely written Off”
Apple’s high-end Mac Pro desktop is unlikely to receive a new model by 2026, signaling a potential shift in the company’s professional desktop strategy. According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Mac Pro series is now considered “on the back burner” and has been “largely written off” internally at Apple. The Mac Pro, once a cornerstone of Apple’s professional lineup, hasn’t seen an update since 2023, fueling speculation about a refresh. However, Gurman’s reporting indicates those hopes are diminishing.
Sources indicate Apple had previously been developing a Mac Pro model in conjunction with its M4 Ultra chip. These plans, however, have reportedly been cancelled, though the reasoning behind the decision remains unclear. The cancellation suggests Apple is reassessing the market demand for a dedicated, ultra-high-end desktop when the mac Studio offers substantial performance in a smaller form factor. This decision impacts Apple’s engineering teams and product roadmap, perhaps reallocating resources to other projects.
Currently, there are no indications of an M5 Ultra Mac Pro in development. Rather, Apple is focusing its resources on the Mac Studio, with one source stating the Mac Studio “represents both the present and future of Apple’s professional desktop strategy.” The Mac Studio, first launched in 2022, has seen three iterations, including a refresh in March 2025.This shift in focus highlights Apple’s belief that the Mac Studio can effectively meet the needs of moast professional users, offering a compelling balance of power and portability.
The Mac Studio has garnered positive reviews, with PCMag awarding a four-and-a-half-star rating to the 2025 top-end model featuring the M4 Max chip. PCMag’s review highlighted the desktop’s capabilities, describing it as “a powerful, versatile compact desktop that excels at single-core and multithreaded tasks,” and offering “a strong balance of performance and value for most professional users.”
This strategic pivot suggests Apple believes the Mac Studio can adequately serve the needs of professional users, potentially rendering a new mac Pro unneeded. The cancellation of both the M4 Ultra chip and the associated Mac Pro model underscores a significant re-evaluation of Apple’s professional desktop roadmap, signaling a clear prioritization of the Mac Studio as the company’s flagship professional desktop offering.
