The reopening this week of the tunnel connection between Sol and Nuevos Ministerios has led Renfe to publish the new Madrid Cercanías map for 2024, with a change that draws attention: in addition to disappearing the icon of works between the aforementioned stations, it also says goodbye to its pink line, C-3a, which is now called C-8a.

This newly named route is a branch of line C-8 (Cercedilla-Guadalajara) that leaves from Villalba and will usually arrive at El Escorial, with a link to Santa María Alameda. To the south, line C-3a, which reached Aranjuez and had already disappeared with the works, is not recovered on the map and line C-3 (purple) remains as it shares the same route.

Renfe explains that it maintains the Alternative Transportation Plan for line C-3a until December 2024, when it is expected to be recovered, because the expansion work on the passenger building at the Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station continues.

To observe the changes carefully, it is best to compare the new Madrid Cercanías map (above) and the one that existed until now (below):

This Saturday, December 23, Renfe restores the usual service on lines C3, C4a (Parla – Alcobendas) and C4b (Parla – Colmenar Viejo) in both directions, thanks to the completion of the improvement works on the Sol tunnel.

With the end of the works it will be possible to get from Aranjuez or Parla to Alcobendas or Colmenar Viejo without having to change trains, as has been the case since February.

Regarding the C-3a alternative plan, it is offered as follows:

The service of line C-3a that was provided before the works between the Aranjuez – Atocha – Sol- Chamartín – Villalba – El Escorial stations, due to the expansion of the Madrid – Chamartín Clara Campoamor passenger building (until December 2024 ), continue connecting with line C-2 trains (Chamartín-Alcalá de Henares/Guadalajara), circulating through the Recoletos tunnel. Travelers from Aranjuez or intermediate origin who want to continue their trip to El Escorial-Santa María de la Alameda must transfer in Chamartín to trains on line C-8a (and vice versa).

In addition, as of December 23, 2023, the connection with the current Cercanías accesses at the Chamartí station will be opened through the access on Agustín de Foxá street.
