Madurai Medical College First Dismissal: Sanskrit Pledge Testimony- Dinamani

Madurai Medical College Principal Dr. A. Rathinavelle has been sacked and transferred to the waiting list for taking oaths in Sanskrit.

A white robe dressing ceremony was held for the new students at the Madurai Government Medical College on Saturday. Ministries P. Moothy, Palanivel Thiagarajan, District Administrator S. Anish Sehga and College Principal A. Rathinavell were present.

Instead of the usual ‘Hippocratic’ pledge that the students would then accept after wearing their uniforms, one student read the Sanskrit ‘Maharishi Sarak Sapt’ pledge translated into English and the other students continued to accept the pledge. The affair caused great controversy.

It is highly reprehensible that the Pledge of Allegiance to Maharishi Sarak Sapt has not been followed in the Madurai Medical College. For this purpose Dr. A. Rathinavel, Principal, Madurai Medical College has been sacked and transferred to the waiting list.

Director of Medical Education Dr. Narayana Babu has been directed to conduct a departmental inquiry into the matter. In the press release, Ma Subramaniam said that it is advised to follow the procedure that is usually followed in medical colleges.

Additional responsibility for Deputy Principal: Following the dismissal of A. Rathinavell, Principal of the College, Dhanalakshmi has been given additional responsibility as Deputy Principal. The government has appointed Dhanalakshmi as the head of the hospital (responsible) and the head of the medical college (responsible).
