Currently, the number of unemployed in the country is 25 lakh 90 thousand. The average number of unemployed at the end of 2023 was 24 lakh 70 thousand. In addition, the number of male unemployed has increased, female unemployment has decreased.
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) quarterly labor force survey report has revealed these data.
The report is prepared on the basis of data for the first quarter of the current year i.e. three months from January to March.
According to the bureau’s calculations, 25 lakh 90 thousand were unemployed in the first quarter of 2023 as well. Accordingly, the number of unemployed did not increase in the first quarter of this year. The current unemployment rate is 3.51 percent, which is slightly higher than the average unemployment rate in 2023. The average unemployment rate in 2023 was 3.36 percent.
According to the bureau, the number of unemployed men was 1.74 million at the end of last March. In the first quarter of 2023 (March-January) this number was 17 lakh 10 thousand. On the other hand, 30 thousand women unemployment has decreased compared to the same period last year. Now the number of unemployed women is 850 thousand.
According to BBS data, there are 7 crore 37 lakh 50 thousand men and women in the labor force. Among them 7 crore 11 lakh 60 thousand people are engaged in work. The rest are unemployed.
The number of people who are out of the labor force is about 4 crore 82 lakh 60 thousand. They are mainly ordinary students, sick persons, elderly men and women, persons unable to work, retired persons and housewives not engaged in work or unwilling to engage.
