Malmö uses chocolate-laced traps to eliminate rats

by time news

Cities are facing significant issues with rats, but a new and more effective trap has been implemented in Malmö for nearly two years. Using this trap, over 5,000 rats have been put down. Pest consultant, Ulrica Nilsson, noted that the traps have made a remarkable difference in the area.

The trap utilizes a carbon dioxide cartridge and involves a piece of chocolate as bait, with the structure instantly breaking the necks of the rats. The rats’ deaths are instantaneous, and the rodents often become food for other animals like birds and cats. To witness the trap in action, watch the clip above.

Rats have become a major problem in many cities. Almost two years ago, a new, more efficient trap was put into use in Malmö. Since then, over 5,000 rats have been euthanized.

– It takes an enormous amount of rats. When we come out to service the traps, we often hear from residents that the situation has gotten much better, says pest consultant Ulrica Nilsson.

The rat becomes food for other animals

The trap is powered by a carbon dioxide cartridge and automatically reloads after each rat killed. The animals don’t even have time to reach the bait, a piece of chocolate, before their necks are broken by the structure.

– The rat dies immediately and lies under the trap. It is often taken care of in an environmentally friendly way by birds or cats, and becomes food for them, explains pest technician Anders Israelsson.
