Man Arrested After Brandishing Nunchucks at Hannah Beazley’s Office

Police have charged a 56-year-old man following a confrontation at the Victoria Park electorate office of Western Australian Minister for Local Government Hannah Beazley on Wednesday afternoon.

Arrest and Charges in Victoria Park

Authorities were called to the electorate office on Albany Highway in the Perth suburb of Victoria Park at approximately 1:15pm on Wednesday. Police apprehended a 56-year-old man from Bentley in the vicinity shortly after the incident. Body cam footage shared by WA Police shows officers packaging a pair of wooden nunchucks as evidence.

Ms. Beazley stated the man had demanded access to her by name while brandishing the weapon. She noted that when the man became escalated, those present could not understand his speech. Witnesses reported hearing screaming coming from the office. We heard some screaming, and that's not uncommon here along this strip, said Olivia Nelson, who observed the event from a nearby business. But we heard it pretty prevalently so we went out there. And this guy was just screaming, cussing, going crazy.

Safety Concerns for Staff and MPs

She expressed that the event was particularly concerning given the heightened environment following the attack on Helen Haines in Victoria. Beazley added, I immediately jumped to concerns for [my staff], and to be honest concerns of getting home and being able to have a conversation with my kids before they found out from anyone else.

The incident has intensified discussions regarding the safety of politicians in Western Australia. Premier Roger Cook is scheduled to meet with party leaders to review security across three tranches: Parliament House, electorate offices, and the private residences of MPs.

Context of Political Violence in Australia

The confrontation in Victoria Park occurred just days after independent MP Helen Haines was run over outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Governor-General Sam Mostyn, who is providing regular updates to King Charles III on Haines’ condition, described the attacks female leaders face as unique and pernicious. Mostyn suggested that factors such as the long tail of Covid and the trend toward isolating in curated information bubbles have contributed to a breakdown in shared facts during public debate.

Other lawmakers have reported ongoing safety challenges. Minister for Women Katy Gallagher stated that while younger women in parliament are feeling defiant, they remain deeply shocked by the situation.
