Manchester City has completed a record-shattering £458m summer squad overhaul under new boss Enzo Maresca, entirely transforming the midfield while raising pressing questions about reliance on star striker Erling Haaland following the departures of key veterans.

New boss Enzo Maresca stepped into the role with the full backing of director of football Hugo Viana, and the pair wasted no time in reshaping the squad during their first transfer window together.
Record-Breaking Spending and a Totally Revamped Midfield
City broke their own transfer fee record twice over the summer, anchoring a joint-British record £125m deal to bring in Maresca’s former Chelsea skipper Enzo Fernandez. That massive outlay was supported by a £116m commitment to secure Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, alongside the addition of 18-year-old Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi for £86m. Together, these three arrivals drove the club’s summer spending to a new Premier League record of £458m for a single window. Indeed, City’s record transfer fee was twice broken this summer.
This spending spree directly targeted the spine of the team. The departures of captain Bernardo Silva, 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, and Nico Gonzalez left the engine room completely transformed, forcing a reset in the middle of the pitch. Senior club sources are said to be delighted by the business done not only during the past couple of months but in January too, when plans were brought forward to sign long-term targets Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi.
The Long-Term Blueprint and the Real Madrid Connection
The transformation did not happen overnight. Tracing the timeline back further, the core rebuild of the team that won the 2023 Champions League in Istanbul really began in January 2025 after a difficult start to that season. Just four players remain from the starting eleven and substitutes from the night they beat Inter Milan in Istanbul to win the continent’s biggest club prize.
Fernandez’s arrival in Manchester also carries significant cross-continental intrigue. According to reporting from The Athletic, the Argentine midfielder was coach Jose Mourinho’s preferred pick to reinforce Real Madrid’s midfield this summer. While Real Madrid publicly denied any interest, with the club going so far as to issue a public press release saying they had no interest in the player, Fernandez ended up joining Manchester City in a deal worth almost €150 million, effectively making him the most expensive transfer of the summer. The Argentine international also became the first player to have had two transfers in his career worth over €100 million.
Real Madrid have done a lot of smart business this summer and it has been evident in the results so far this season. However, one area the club have struggled to reinforce is the midfield unit. Los Blancos were close to signing Rodri, but the Spanish international ended up joining Barcelona, much to the frustration of coach Jose Mourinho.
Squad Depth and the Haaland Gamble
Inside the club, confidence is high. Maresca now has the luxury of calling upon two established players in almost every position. City feel the squad is stronger at this point than at the beginning of last season which they believe has been achieved by remaining calm and trusting the transfer strategy.
Yet, observers point out some big questions remain. How will their new midfield signings all fit together? And, despite the vast amount of money spent, have they actually left themselves without a back-up to Erling Haaland?
What Lies Ahead in the Title Race
Fortunately for Real Madrid, the club have performed well early on in the new season with existing stars like Jude Bellingham taking a lot of initiative. Bellingham has gelled with Eduardo Camavinga, thus adding the much needed solidity in the middle of the park. That stability will be tested against better oppositions, though, and it will be interesting to see how the pack performs in those crunch matches. Real Madrid’s next game is against Real Betis, followed by a Champions League matchup against Inter Milan. If Mourinho spots any weakness against these better teams, it won’t be surprising to see Real Madrid going after a new midfielder in the January transfer window. That is where the availability with someone like Enzo Fernandez could have been handy. But now that the midfielder has joined Man City, Real Madrid must find other options in the market.
