A 23-year-old Alabama jeweler has captivated social media after revealing a custom-made prosthetic eye featuring a dazzling 2-carat diamond. The unique ocular enhancement, estimated to cost around $2 million, has sparked both admiration and concern online.
Slater Jones’ journey to a diamond-encrusted eye began at age 17 when he contracted a toxoplasmosis infection, leading to a progressive loss of vision in his right eye. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, doctors ultimately determined that the eye needed to be removed. Rather than settle for a conventional prosthetic, Jones, leveraging his skills as a jewelry designer, envisioned a bolder statement.
He collaborated with John Im, an ophthalmologist with over 30 years of experience, to bring his vision to life. The result is a meticulously crafted artificial eyeball with a two-carat diamond embedded directly into the iris. According to reports, the team initially considered a 3-carat diamond, but it proved too large for the eye socket.
Jones has embraced his new look, adopting the moniker “Diamond Eye” and utilizing the striking prosthetic to promote his jewelry business on platforms like Instagram. Online reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with commenters describing the eye as “the most sophisticated I’ve ever seen.” The Daily Mail has even suggested it may be the world’s most expensive prosthetic eye.
Im, who has created approximately 10,000 prosthetic eyes over the past 32 years for patients ranging from infants to centenarians, confirmed that Jones’ creation represents the highest material value of any prosthetic he has ever produced.
However, the extravagant prosthetic has also raised concerns about safety. Some social media users have warned that the conspicuous display of wealth could make Jones a target for crime, with comments like, “It’s all fun and games until you get attacked.” Others have simply expressed worry for his well-being, urging caution when in public.
Despite the potential risks, Jones remains optimistic, stating that losing his eye has, paradoxically, “brought new light into his life.” He appears undeterred by the cautionary comments, embracing the attention and the opportunity to showcase his unique artistry.
