Mason Mount Outshines Bruno Fernandes: Man Utd Fans Name Fiorentina Clash Man of the Match

Manchester United supporters have delivered their verdict on the standout performer from Saturday’s pre-season encounter against Fiorentina, and it wasn’t captain Bruno Fernandes. Instead, midfielder Mason Mount secured the Man of the Match award, earning 25% of the vote and surpassing Fernandes, who received 21%.

The friendly at Old Trafford, marking the end of United’s pre-season campaign under manager Ruben Amorim, saw Fiorentina take an early lead through Simon Sohm. However, United responded in the first half with a goal from Robin Gosens, assisted by a Bruno Fernandes corner, leveling the score at 1-1. Despite a competitive match, neither side could find a winner during regulation time, leading to a penalty shootout.

All five of United’s penalty takers successfully converted their spot-kicks, with goalkeeper Altay Bayindir proving crucial by saving Fabiano Parisi’s attempt. The victory concluded a successful pre-season tour for the Red Devils, allowing Amorim to assess his squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.

But it was the performance of Mount that truly resonated with the fans. The official Manchester United website revealed the results of the supporter vote, which saw Mount emerge as the clear winner. Bryan Mbeumo finished third with 14% of the vote, while Matheus Cunha and Leny Yoro secured fifth and fourth place respectively, with 7% and 10% of the vote.

Mount’s versatility and work rate particularly impressed Amorim, who lauded the player’s tactical intelligence. “It’s unbelievable the way he [Mason Mount] works, moving all the time from positions,” Amorim told MUTV. “He knows all positions, but also the other guys; it was a good test to prepare the first team.”

Deployed alongside Mbeumo and Cunha in Amorim’s system, the 26-year-old Mount played 84 minutes before being substituted for Manuel Ugarte. His dynamic movement and understanding of space clearly caught the manager’s eye and captivated the United faithful.

As Manchester United prepares to kick off their 2025-26 Premier League campaign against rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford, the positive momentum from pre-season, and the emergence of key performers like Mason Mount, will be vital.
