The manager of the Italian first division soccer team AC Fiorentina, Joe Barone, died on Tuesday at the age of 57 after a cardiac arrest. This was announced by the current eighth-placed Serie A player.

The club’s general director collapsed on Sunday shortly before kick-off of the first division game at Atalanta Bergamo. Barone was immediately taken to a hospital in Milan and underwent surgery. However, the hope that he would get well again was not fulfilled.

Barone leaves behind a wife and children

In a statement, the club mourned the loss of a formative personality “who will never be forgotten.” Barone was “always close by, both in the happiest and the most difficult of times.”

The native Sicilian had spent many years in the USA and was also vice president of Cosmos New York, Franz Beckenbauer’s former club. He has worked at Fiorentina since 2019.
