Concerns Raised Over Radicalization of Manchester Synagogue Attacker Before deadly Yom Kippur Assault

Neighbors of the man who attacked a synagogue in Manchester,England, reported concerns to police that he and a family member were becoming increasingly radicalized and attempting to proselytize to local children, raising questions about potential missed warning signs.

Jihad al-Shamie, 35, carried out the attack on a Heaton park synagogue on Yom Kippur, resulting in the deaths of two worshippers. Authorities initially stated that al-Shamie was not previously known to counter-terrorism officials, but emerging reports reveal a pattern of concerning behavior observed by those who knew his family in recent years.

A Gradual Shift during the Pandemic

According to multiple neighbors, a significant change in al-shamie and another relative’s behavior began during the COVID-19 pandemic. This change included adopting traditional Islamic dress, holding “private” gatherings in their garden, and attempting to “preach the Qur’an” on their normally quiet suburban street.

One neighbor recounted witnessing al-Shamie attempting to convert children. “He was trying to get the kids to read the Qur’an. He was trying to get them to change their ways,” they said. Another resident described the family’s increasing isolation. “They used to be friendly, but they became very withdrawn. They didn’t want to interact with anyone.”

These observations prompted several neighbors to contact the police, expressing their fears about the family’s growing extremism. While it is indeed unclear what action, if any, was taken in response to these reports, the concerns highlight a potential gap in identifying and addressing radicalization within communities.

The Attack and Police Response

On Saturday,al-Shamie stormed the synagogue wielding a knife. He was later shot and killed by police.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment and previously stated on Friday that al-Shamie “may have been influenced by extreme Islamist ideology.”

Family History and a Troubled Past

Neighbors described the family’s earlier years as more integrated into the community. The neighbor recalled being invited to meals at their home approximately 15 years ago, but this stopped after the father, Faraj, moved out. The mother, Formoz, was remembered as a “really nice” and “strong woman” who largely raised their three sons on her own.

However, the shift observed during the pandemic was stark. “It was the change because I would talk to them all the time and then [one of the family] just started rocking up in the robes,” a resident of Prestwich, north Manchester, explained. “He went from not going down that path to going down that path.”

The family’s gatherings also became more insular.”They didn’t have any white friends. I thought: what the heck is going on? It wasn’t just praying in the garden – it was private and secret,” another neighbor noted. Reports also surfaced indicating that police had visited the family home earlier this year due to safeguarding concerns.

Adding another layer to the unfolding narrative, it has been revealed that al-Shamie suffered a severe head injury approximately 20 years ago after falling from a cliff.”Jihad had a bad accident,” a neighbor recounted. “He fell off a cliff and got airlifted to London. he had massive head injuries, it was horrific. You didn’t see much of him after that – he became very quiet and reclusive.”

Furthermore, The Guardian reported that al-Shamie was on police bail while under examination for an alleged rape at the time of the synagogue attack, which occurred about two miles from his family home.

Family Condemnation

on Friday, Jihad’s father, Faraj al-Shamie, issued a statement condemning his son’s “heinous act.”

“The news from Manchester regarding the terrorist attack targeting a Jewish synagogue has been a profound shock to us,” he wrote. “The al-Shamie family in the UK and abroad strongly condemns this heinous act, which targeted peaceful, innocent civilians. We fully distance ourselves from this attack and express our deep shock and sorrow over what has happened. Our hearts and thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we pray for their strength and comfort.”

The unfolding investigation will undoubtedly focus on understanding the factors that contributed to al-Shamie’s radicalization and whether opportunities to intervene were missed, raising critical questions about community vigilance and the effectiveness of preventative measures against extremism.
