Manchester: Manchester United returned to winning ways in the English Premier League after a draw with Newcastle yesterday. Manchester United celebrate New Year’s defeat by beating Burnley by three goals to one at home.
For United, superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Scoot McTomney found the target, while Ben Mee’s own goal also helped. Aaron Lennon scored a consolation goal for Burnley.
Coach Ralph Rangnick has dropped United with big changes from the match against Newcastle. Edinson Cavani, Luke Shaw, Aaron van Bisakka, Greenwood and Matic all made the starting XI. The team played in a very different 4-2-2-2 style.
United dominated from the start of the match. United took the lead in the eighth minute when Scoot McTom scored the only goal of the game. McTom, who accepted a pass from Ronaldo, skillfully put the ball into the net.
United then took the lead in the 27th minute. This time it was Joden Sancho who led the way. Sancho’s shot into the back of the net was deflected by Burnley defender Ben Mee. Ronaldo scored in the 35th minute.
Scoot McTomini’s shot hits the crossbar but goes straight into Ronaldo’s leg. Cristiano easily fired into the empty post. This is the player’s eighth goal of the season. With this, Cristiano Ronaldo became the fourth highest scorer in the Premier League.
But in the 38th minute Aaron Lennon scored a goal. The second half was goalless. United had several chances but could not convert them into goals. This was United’s last match in 2021.
With this victory, United finished sixth in the points table. United have 31 points from 18 games. Burnley are 18th with 11 points
City in front
Manchester City are top of the English Premier League in the new year with an eight-point lead. City beat Brentford 1–0 in their final match of 2021 for their tenth consecutive victory in the league. Phil Foden scored City’s winning goal in the 16th minute.
Chelsea drew with Brighton and Liverpool lost to Leicester City, ensuring City’s dominance in the league would continue into 2022. City 50 in 20 games; Chelsea have 42 points and Liverpool 41. The fact that Liverpool have played less than a game is a threat to second-placed Chelsea.
