Mindi Manuel Honored for Pioneering Neuroprotective Nutrition in Senior Care
A new approach to dietary science is transforming senior living, and Mindi Manuel is leading the charge. Manuel has been named a 2025 McKnight’s Women of Distinction Commercial Excellence award winner for her groundbreaking work integrating nutritional science with frontline care in senior living communities.
From Finance to Fighting for Better Senior Care
Manuel’s dedication to senior care is rooted in personal experience. Having navigated a career in finance after overcoming cancer, and witnessing her father’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease, she brings a uniquely empathetic and determined perspective to her role. Currently serving as senior manager, area clinical support, at Sodexo in North Bethesda, MD, Manuel has consistently demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of those in her care.
The “Vibrant Mind” and the Neuroprotective Diet
A board-certified specialist in gerontological nutrition and a certified dementia practitioner, Manuel spearheaded a comprehensive research initiative. She collaborated with neurologists at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, alongside Social Impact Partners, to conduct a meta-analysis of over 250 academic research papers. This rigorous review culminated in the co-authored white paper, “The Vibrant Mind: A Guide to Neuroprotective Nutrition.”
The findings from this research directly informed the development of what Manuel and her team call “the neuroprotective diet.” This specialized dietary approach is now being implemented across Sodexo’s network of 300 senior living communities and skilled nursing facilities, with over 400 customized recipes created in partnership with the company’s culinary team. “.
A Champion of Person-Centered Care
Manuel’s impact extends beyond research and recipe development. According to a company release, she manages a regional team of dietitians, ensuring her strategies are translated into tangible improvements for residents and patients. She also prioritizes direct engagement, making time to connect with individuals while on-site.
