MADRID, 4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

This July 4 marks the 89th anniversary of the death, in 1934, of Marie Curie, a Polish scientist nationalized French, pioneer in the field of radioactivity with her husband, Pierre Curie.

Among other merits, she was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, the first person to receive two Nobel Prizes in different specialties -Physics and Chemistry- and the first woman to hold the position of professor at the University of Paris.

Throughout his life, he left numerous reflections on his vision of the world. Here we have selected seven.

Nothing in this world is to be feared… only understood.

– We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves.

I never see what has been done; I only see what remains to be done.

– They taught me that the path of progress was neither quick nor easy.

Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.

– You cannot expect to build a better world without improving individuals.

I am among those who think that science has great beauty.

BORN IN WARSAW

Maria Salomea Sklodowska-Curie was born on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, in what was then the Tsarate of Poland, administered by the Russian Empire. She studied clandestinely and began her scientific training in that city. In 1891, at age 24, she followed her older sister to Paris, where he completed his studies and carried out his most outstanding scientific work.

She shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with her husband Pierre Curie and with the physicist Henri Becquerel. She won the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Her achievements include the development of the theory of radioactivity (a term she coined herself), techniques for the isolation of radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two elements: polonium and radium. Under his direction, the first studies were carried out on the treatment of neoplasms with radioactive isotopes..

He founded the Curie Institute in Paris and Warsaw, which remain among the leading centers of medical research today. During World War I, he created the first radiological centers for military use.

He died of aplastic anemia caused by radiation exposure from keeping radium-laced test tubes in his pockets during the research and construction of World War I mobile X-ray units.
