Cilic Ends Pinnington Jones’ Dallas Open Run; Mboko Reaches Qatar Open Final
A remarkable run at the Dallas Open came to an end for Briton Jack Pinnington Jones, while Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko continued her stunning form at the Qatar Open, both reaching the final stages of their respective tournaments. The results mark significant milestones for both rising stars and established veterans.
Pinnington Jones, 22, navigated a challenging path to the quarter-finals, progressing through two rounds of qualifying before securing impressive victories over Italy’s Flavio Cobolli, ranked 20th in the world, and American Eliot Spizzirri, currently 68th. However, his first ATP Tour quarter-final appearance proved a bridge too far against the experienced Marin Cilic.
Cilic Advances in Dallas
The 2014 US Open champion, Cilic, demonstrated his championship pedigree, defeating Pinnington Jones 6-1, 6-4 in a swift 78-minute encounter. Cilic, a former world number three, will now face the winner of the all-American semi-final between top seed Taylor Fritz and Sebastian Korda for a place in the final.
Mboko Shocks Top Players in Qatar
Meanwhile, at the Qatar Open, 19-year-old Mboko has been the story of the tournament. Building on her upset victory over Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, she secured another impressive win, defeating former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2. This victory sets up a final showdown against Karolina Muchova, the Czech 14th seed.
Muchova herself overcame a tough challenge, battling back from a set down to defeat Maria Sakkari 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. This win came just a day after Sakkari delivered a major upset of her own, eliminating top seed Iga Swiatek from the competition.
Mboko’s run is a testament to the rising talent in women’s tennis, and her upcoming match against Muchova promises to be a captivating final.
