Justice: Mario Mètonou raises doubts about the independence of the Criet

A controversy over the independence of the Court for the Suppression of Economic Crimes and Terrorism (Criet) has arisen since the conviction and imprisonment of opponents ReckyaMadougou and Joël Aïvo. To remove all doubt, the special prosecutor at the Criet, Mario Mètonou, spoke about the independence of the jurisdiction. First, he said that this Special Court has the specific objective of fighting primarily against economic crimes which constitute obstacles to the development and the realization of projects beneficial to the populations. And according to this, it cannot evolve under order. According to him, the Criet is not under any pressure from the executive in the context of the various legal proceedings. Moreover, prosecutor Mario Mètonou pointed out that since its creation, the Criet has condemned more political actors close to power than those of the opposition. “Most of the people I have prosecuted for economic offenses are people who claim to be not from the opposition, but from the current governance,” he said. Special Prosecutor Mario Mètonou also said that At no time was he retained by the “political arm” in a procedure. According to him, the Criet has a heavy hand when it comes to condemning. For him, economic crimes and/or acts related to terrorism have serious consequences. It is therefore normal that in the face of such cases, justice can sanction with the utmost rigor. The jurisdiction is therefore “totally independent”.
