Ecuadorian Football Star Mario Pineida and Wife Killed in Shocking Attack
A wave of grief has swept through Ecuadorian football following the tragic murder of Mario Pineida, a celebrated player for Barcelona Sporting Club, and his wife. The 33-year-old footballer was fatally shot outside a butcher shop in the Samanes 4 sector of Guayaquil on December 17, 2025, amidst a disturbing surge of violence targeting the nation’s footballers.
The attack, confirmed by the National Police, occurred when two individuals on motorcycles opened fire on three citizens, with Pineida among the victims. The senseless act has left fans of “Los Toreros” – Barcelona’s nickname – and the wider Ecuadorian football community reeling.
“This unfortunate news keeps all of us who are part of the institution deeply shocked, and mourns us as a Barcelona family,” read a statement released by Barcelona SC.
Pineida had recently returned to Barcelona in 2025, the club where he first achieved prominence. He was instrumental in securing national titles for the team in 2016 and 2020, adding to his accolades with a 2024 Ecuador Cup victory while playing for El Nacional. His contributions extended beyond domestic success, with notable performances in international tournaments solidifying his status as a key figure in Ecuadorian football.
Born in 1992, Pineida’s talent was evident from a young age. He began his career in the youth system of Panama SC before making a name for himself at Independiente del Valle in 2010. As an 18-year-old, he joined the Sangolquí club, where he honed his skills and embarked on his professional journey. Pineida distinguished himself as a versatile, ambidextrous full-back, known for his speed and ability to contribute to the attack.
A defining moment in his career came in 2015 when he scored a memorable goal for Independiente del Valle against Estudiantes de La Plata in the Copa Libertadores – a goal forever etched in the memories of Ecuadorian fans. His move to Barcelona SC in 2016 further cemented his reputation as one of the country’s premier full-backs. He played a vital role in the team’s championship-winning campaigns of 2016 and 2020, endearing himself to the Barcelona faithful with his ball-winning ability, attacking prowess, and leadership qualities.
This tragedy is not an isolated incident. The attack on Pineida is part of a disturbing trend of violence against Ecuadorian footballers in 2025. Reports from El Comercio indicate that Ariel Suárez of Orense survived an attack in September, while Maicol Valencia and Leandro Yépez from Exapromo, and Jonathan González from 22 de Julio, were fatally shot in similar circumstances. Jostin Mero, a former youth player for Manta, also died after an attempted attack in September, and Bryan ‘Cuco’ Angulo was reportedly the victim of a murder attempt in October while traveling to training. Earlier in the year, Richard Mina of Liga de Quito sustained injuries during an assault.
Barcelona SC shared a somber image on X (formerly Twitter) acknowledging the loss.
The escalating violence raises serious concerns about the safety of athletes and the broader security situation in Ecuador. As the nation mourns the loss of Mario Pineida and his wife, the call for justice and a comprehensive response to this growing crisis grows ever louder.
