It was thanks to a popular comedy, “Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom”, that Marion Cotillard, a dramatic actress, spoke to us at length about her work. And she also lifted the veil of her life a little bit. The encounter was unexpected. In the last edition of the Unifrance meetings, in Paris, nobody was expecting her. She decided to appear unannounced to promote the new episode of the best-known franchise in French cinema, in which she plays Cleopatra, in a secondary role. This episode — and the note is not insignificant — was directed by her husband, the actor and filmmaker Guillaume Canet, who, in addition to these functions, also plays Asterix. The film was released in that country in the meantime and was the success that the French box office was waiting for in its domestic market. To date, it has taken 4.5 million French people to theaters, not at all extravagant in the country where cinema was born, but not bad, however, for the post-pandemic times that are now. In Portugal, it premieres next Thursday, April 6.

You must have had fun playing Cleopatra. Can a character like this compare to preparing for a big dramatic role?
It cannot. It is true that what mattered most here was fun, of course. Also because my role is very short. What’s funny about this case is that I’m not used to comedy at all. It’s not my comfort zone, which, by the way, I don’t even know what it is. I think I always ran away from that area. Drama is a world I know. Not comedy.
