The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, indicated that the maritime corridor announced by the United States to deliver humanitarian aid in Gaza from Cyprus will come into operation this Sunday, March 10.

“We affirm that the protection of civilian lives is a key element of international humanitarian law that must be respected and, together, we must do everything possible to ensure that aid reaches people who need it so desperately,” they said.

Likewise, Von der Leyen has praised Cyprus’ leadership in launching this initiative, ensuring that this country has always been a “bridge” between Europe and the Middle East and initiatives like this “demonstrate this historic role.”

The intention to establish a humanitarian corridor by sea was advanced this Thursday by the President of the United States, Joseph Biden, just before his State of the Union address.

The initiative is supported by other members of the international community such as the United Kingdom, whose Foreign Minister, David Cameron, has confirmed that London will participate in the maritime corridor to deliver aid directly to Gaza. “We continue to urge Israel to allow more trucks into Gaza as the fastest way to get aid to those who need it,” he urged in a call to Tel Aviv.

Following the first information, the spokesman for the UN General Secretariat, Stéphane Dujarric, stated that any way of sending more aid to the Strip is “obviously good.”

“Our goal and that of the international community must continue to be to increase large-scale distribution and entry of aid by land. It is profitable, it is effective in volume, and that is why we have said from the beginning that we need more entry points and a greater volume of aid by land,” he said.

Israel’s severe restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip are leaving a Palestinian population without reserves, who in addition to dying under bombs are already beginning to die from starvation and disease.
