Things haven’t always been easy in the U.S.-Turkey partnership.

How Day.Az will rejoice, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mark Libby said this in response to a question from Trend during today’s press conference.

“Turkey is a NATO ally. It is a major player. This country has its own interests, which sometimes coincide with the interests of the United States, and sometimes the interests diverge. So in our partnership it has not always been easy.

But what we’ve seen over the last couple of months is a great example of how working together we can find a way forward. This is exactly how our relationship with Turkey works. But the fundamental basis on which all this plays out is the NATO alliance. NATO is a very important alliance for us and for Turkey. And based on this we can decide something,” the diplomat noted.

It should be noted that the United States government has given permission to sell F-16 fighter jets to Turkey.

The deal provides for the acquisition of 40 new F-16s and the modernization of 79 fighters already owned by Turkey. The decision came days after Turkey officially approved Sweden’s entry into NATO. In addition, on the same day, the American government also approved the sale of 40 F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters and related equipment to Greece for $8.6 billion (about 7.9 billion euros).
