Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have purchased the historic Strancally Castle in County Waterford, Ireland. The nearly 200-year-old Gothic estate spans 178 hectares along the River Blackwater, offering the billionaire tech executive a private residence roughly 150 kilometers from his company’s international headquarters in Dublin.
The Meta chief executive and his spouse secured Strancally Castle, a grand neogothic stronghold completed in 1827, according to reporting from Business Insider Deutschland. The property sits in the southeastern corner of Ireland’s County Waterford, positioned about 150 kilometers southwest of Dublin where Meta maintains its core European operations.
The historic estate was previously owned by Michael Alen-Buckley, a co-founder of the London-based private investment firm RAB Capital, who spent two and a half decades maintaining and restoring the structure alongside his wife Giancarla.
Inside the Historic Waterford Estate on the River Blackwater
Strancally Castle was originally constructed between 1825 and 1835 for John Keily, a former conservative Member of Parliament, as documented by the Irish National Built Heritage Service. Designed to evoke an imposing medieval fortress, the three-story stone structure encompasses approximately 1,500 square meters of interior living space.

The surrounding grounds extend across 178 hectares of mature forests, manicured gardens, walled enclosures, and private access to a boat dock along the Blackwater River. Local real estate observers note that the sprawling layout is vast enough to require brisk walking just to traverse internal distances, a quirky architectural detail highlighted in regional historical texts.
Financial estimates regarding the transaction vary. Local newspaper The Irish Times initially reported that the acquisition value ranged from 20 to 30 million euros, while other international outlets placed the expected valuation slightly higher. Even at the upper end of those estimates, the Irish estate represents a modest expenditure compared to Zuckerberg’s recent domestic acquisitions, including a 170 million US dollar mega-property acquired on Florida’s Billionaire Bunker island earlier in the year.
Proximity to Meta Operations and Global Real Estate Expansion
Beyond its architectural pedigree, the Irish stronghold links Zuckerberg’s private life directly to one of his company’s most vital international hubs. Meta currently employs approximately 1,500 workers across offices in Dublin and Cork, alongside a major data center facility operating in Clonee. Corporate representatives emphasized that the family intends to maintain its primary residence in the United States while utilizing the Irish estate during European business travel.
The acquisition cements a massive global real estate portfolio held by the Meta chief. Alongside his primary base in Palo Alto, California, Zuckerberg owns multiple properties near Lake Tahoe, extensive landholdings on the Hawaiian island of Kauaʻi, and a custom superyacht named Launchpad valued at several hundred million dollars.
Economic Impact and Farewell from the Former Owners
For rural County Waterford, the arrival of a high-net-worth tech titan introduces significant economic potential. Regional commentary notes that the arrival of wealthy international buyers—following similar high-end property purchases by British magnates in neighboring districts—brings substantial capital into a predominantly agricultural landscape known more for sheep farming than corporate wealth.
The departing owners expressed mixed emotions as they handed over the keys after a quarter-century of stewardship. They conveyed relief that the Zuckerberg family intends to continue sustainable investments in the maintenance and enhancement of the historic grounds.
