A member of the British aristocracy, Charles James Spencer-Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough, has entered pleas of not guilty in connection with allegations of repeatedly strangling his estranged wife. The case, which involves accusations of domestic violence, is set to unfold in the British legal system.
The 70-year-old duke, a relative of both Sir Winston Churchill and Princess Diana, appeared at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Monday to address three charges of intentional strangulation leveled against his wife, Edla Marlborough. According to court records, the alleged incidents occurred on three separate dates: November 13, 2022, April 23, 2023, and January 29, 2024.
Allegations Detail Multiple Incidents
The prosecution alleges that the first incident took place on November 13, 2022, following a dispute in the couple’s garden. The court was told the duke allegedly struck his wife multiple times before allegedly putting his hands around her neck.
On April 23, 2023, the allegations state that Edla Marlborough fled to a laundry room, where she was allegedly pursued, grabbed, struck with a closed fist, and then strangled. A further incident is alleged to have occurred on January 29, 2024, where the duke is accused of pushing his wife on a bed and assaulting her after allegedly tightening his grip around her neck.
Family Background and Separation
Spencer-Churchill, known to family as Jamie, married Welsh ceramicist Edla Griffiths in 2002. The couple, who share two children – Lady Araminta Spencer-Churchill, an equestrian, born in 2007, and Lord Caspar Spencer-Churchill, born in 2008 – separated in 2024 after over two decades of marriage.
The duke confirmed his name, date of birth, and address – Blenheim Palace – during his appearance in court. He was granted conditional bail by chief magistrate Paul Goldspring and is scheduled to appear at Oxford Crown Court on February 5 to formally enter his pleas.
The case is expected to draw significant public attention given the Duke of Marlborough’s prominent lineage and the serious nature of the charges.
