He returned to be directed by Coppola in the film Apocalypse Now (1979). He plays US Colonel Walter E. Kurtz, a former senior Green Beret officer, once a model officer and close to promotion to the rank of general but who went mad and became a deserter. The film is loosely based on Joseph Conrad’s novel, Heart of Darkness. To pay homage to the birth of Marlon Brando, Sky Cinema Due remembers him with two films from 6.50pm: first it’s Superman, then Coppola’s war masterpiece, winner of the Palme d’Or and 2 Oscars, Apocalypse Now
