While the evidence is compelling, some scientists urge caution. A particle physicist writing in the journal Nature acknowledged the recordings provide “persuasive evidence of dust-induced discharges,” but emphasized that because the discharges were only heard and not seen, definitive confirmation of “Martian lightning” remains elusive. The physicist added that, “Given the history of this field, the debate is highly likely to continue for some time.”

Scientists are already discussing the need for more advanced instrumentation – including dedicated atmospheric discharge sensors and higher-resolution cameras – to be deployed to Mars to resolve the ambiguity.
