‘Marshals’ Premiere: Monica’s Shocking Death & Kayce’s Future Explained

by Ethan Brooks

The premiere of the Marshals series on Sunday delivered a shocking blow to viewers, revealing the fate of Monica Dutton, the wife of Kayce Dutton and mother of Tate. The character, played by Kelsey Asbille, was notably absent from pre-release promotional materials, fueling speculation that something was amiss. That speculation was confirmed with the heartbreaking news that Monica succumbed to cancer, a decision that profoundly impacted those involved, both on and off screen.

The revelation came swiftly in the first episode of the Yellowstone spinoff, immediately altering the course of Kayce’s storyline. Luke Grimes, who portrays Kayce, described his initial reaction to the news as “heartbroken,” not only for his character but also for his close friend and colleague, Kelsey Asbille. “Kelsey’s turn into one of my best friends. She’s the coolest actor I’ve ever worked with,” Grimes shared, emphasizing Asbille’s warmth and kindness towards the entire cast and crew.

A Difficult Conversation and a Professional Response

Grimes recounted the difficult task of informing Asbille about the storyline. “I worked up the courage to call,” he said. “I didn’t know how she was going to feel about it. I had to see how she was doing.” To his relief, Asbille handled the news with remarkable grace and understanding. “We had a great conversation. In true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood. She’s going to do just fine. She is so talented, gorgeous, and awesome. She’s going to operate. That’s not an issue,” Grimes added.

The decision to write Monica out of the series wasn’t taken lightly, according to series creator Spencer Hudnut. He explained that the move was necessary to disrupt Kayce’s established happiness and propel him into a new chapter. “Kayce and Monica had such a elegant ending [in] Yellowstone so when I first met with Luke, he was like, ‘Kayce’s really happy. Are we going to make a show about a guy who’s really happy?’” Hudnut said. “We had to shake up his life, to get him off the ranch and into a new position.”

Addressing a Larger Issue

Beyond the narrative necessity, Hudnut emphasized the intention to ground the storyline in a real-world issue. Monica’s death by cancer, he explained, was a deliberate choice to highlight the disproportionately high cancer rates within Native American reservations, often linked to environmental toxins. “We’re shining a light on an issue. She passes because of cancer. Reservations have a high rate of cancer because of all the toxins that have been dumped on them,” Hudnut stated. “We wanted to make her death about a bigger issue. We wanted to be extremely respectful of that character.”

Despite her physical absence, Monica’s presence will continue to be felt throughout the series. Hudnut revealed that her spirit will serve as a guiding force for Kayce, with the character frequently returning to her resting place to maintain a connection. “It’s a sacred spot,” he said.

Impact on Kayce and Tate’s Relationship

The loss of Monica will also significantly impact Kayce’s relationship with his son, Tate. Hudnut explained that Kayce previously relied on Monica as the primary parent, while he struggled with self-doubt in that role. “Kayce saw himself as the protector and provider and Monica as the real parent. Because of his background, he doesn’t trust himself as a parent to some degree,” Hudnut said. “He’s forced to embrace life as a single parent; there’s a scene early in Episode 2 where that dynamic really hits.” The early episodes of the season will explore Tate’s role in helping his father navigate this grief and embrace his new responsibilities.

As for the possibility of Kayce finding love again, Grimes suggested it’s unlikely in the near future. “I don’t reckon it’s outside of the realm of possibility, but not for a while. The audience, Kayce, and me, Luke, the actor, would feel like we were cheating if it happened anytime soon. It would feel very weird to me personally, not even as the character. It’s going to be a long time before that would feel OK.”

The death of Monica Dutton marks a pivotal moment in the Marshals series, setting the stage for a season of emotional exploration and challenging circumstances for Kayce and his family. The series continues Sundays at 8/7c on CBS.

Marshals is expected to continue exploring the complexities of Kayce’s new role and the evolving dynamics within the Broken Rock Reservation. Viewers can anticipate further developments in the investigation and the ongoing impact of Monica’s passing on those closest to her.
