The Central Government has awarded tenders to private companies for coal mines in the delta districts of Setyarthoppu, Vadasery, and Michaelpatti, which is a violation of the state’s rights, according to the Marxist Communist Party. The party’s state secretary, K. Balakrishnan, said in a statement that despite massive opposition, the central government had abandoned the extraction of methane and shale gas in Tamil Nadu’s rice-growing delta regions. Mineral resources were essential for the country’s development, but mining and destruction of agriculture threatened food security. Following a resolution by the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the region was declared a protected agricultural zone. The BJP government, which was working to privatize, had given tenders to private companies for coal mines in Setyarthoppu, Vadaseri, and Michaelpatti delta districts, according to K. Balakrishnan. The Marxist Communist Party strongly condemned this because it would severely harm the delta districts and affect the livelihoods and food security of farmers and all rural inhabitants. The party requested the Tamil Nadu government to prevent the central government from harming the delta districts and urged democratic movements to come together to defeat the proposal.
