Japan Airlines is offering fans a unique way to connect with the game they love, proving that unforgettable experiences are sometimes more valuable than frequent flyer miles.
Approximately 50 elementary school students recently experienced a baseball masterclass with professional player Masanao Yoshida, thanks to the airline’s “JAL Mile Life” program. Participants earned their spots by exchanging 10,000 JAL miles through a lottery system.
A Day with a Star
The event, held for the third time this year, ignited a wave of excitement as Yoshida stepped onto the field. A resounding cheer erupted, and the children’s faces lit up as they gazed upon their idol. The two-hour session was meticulously designed to cater to all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned players.
The lesson itself was divided into three key components: catch ball, batting practice (“knock”), and long tee/tee work. Yoshida began each segment with a comprehensive lecture, followed by hands-on practice where he personally coached each team, ensuring every child received individual attention.
Yoshida didn’t just focus on technique; he also shared insights into the mental aspects of the game. After the practical session, he demonstrated tee batting, captivating the children and their parents with approximately 20 powerful swings from just three meters in front of home plate.
Beyond the Diamond: Q&A and Autographs
The experience extended beyond drills and swings. Yoshida fielded 20 questions from the eager young players, covering topics ranging from batting stances and training regimens to his experiences in Major League Baseball and even career advice.
The day culminated in a rock-paper-scissors competition, with the winner receiving a batting glove autographed by Yoshida – in some cases, the very glove used during the tee batting demonstration. Every participant received a certificate of completion, a wristband, and a special gift bag containing Yoshida’s autograph.
Looking Ahead: WBC Ambitions and Travel Tips
Following the baseball class, Yoshida discussed his impressions of the event and expressed his enthusiasm for participating in next year’s World Baseball Classic (WBC). He also shared his strategies for combating jet lag during long-haul flights, particularly the Narita to Boston route, which JAL operates daily.
“Boston is far away, and there’s a time difference, so I really want to sleep, but it’s difficult because I often travel with children,” Yoshida explained. “I adjust the time difference depending on the destination. Even if I’m really sleepy during the day, if I sleep there, the jet lag will get longer. I can’t fix it all at once, but I’ll adjust it little by little. I sleep quite a bit when traveling within the United States.”
With convenient access to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, from both the airport and downtown, JAL encourages fans to experience Yoshida’s talent firsthand.
