Speaker of the National Parliament. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said that Matarbari deep sea port is a gateway that will facilitate connectivity with countries like Nepal and Bhutan. This seaport is the right policy decision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He said these while addressing a workshop titled ‘Bangladesh’s First Deep Sea Port: Matarbari Launching a New Scenario in the Bay of Bengal’ at the Parliament LD Hall of Jatiya Sangsad Bhawan on Tuesday (March 19). The workshop was organized by the Ocean Policy Research Unit of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Japan.

Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said, ‘Through the Matarbari deep sea port, the socio-economic development of neighboring states including Bangladesh will take place. This sea port will play a helpful role in increasing business competition in addition to facilitating communication with different states through waterways.

The speaker said, ‘This seaport will highlight the importance of the Bay of Bengal to various countries in South Asia. In addition to using the ocean, attention must also be paid to its sustainable development.’

Imadul Islam, research fellow of Ocean Policy Peace Foundation and researcher Kamran Reza Chowdhury presented the keynote of the workshop moderated by Humayun Kabir, president of Bangladesh Enterprise Institute. Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Masud Bin Momen, Secretary of the Maritime Affairs Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rear Admiral (Retd.) spoke as special guests. Khurshed Alam, president of the Ocean Policy Research Institute of Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Japan. Hide Sakaguchi, Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Kiminori Iwama and JICA Bangladesh Chief Representative Tomohide Ichiguchi.
