China is now the launchpad for a new, science-backed approach to maternal nutrition, as Nestlé expands its Materna range to offer support from pre-conception through post-partum recovery. It’s a big move, signaling a growing emphasis on tailored nutrition for women at every stage of motherhood—and it’s backed by over a decade of research.

A Three-Stage System for Mom and Baby
Nestlé’s Materna range now provides targeted nutritional support for women throughout their entire motherhood journey, from planning for pregnancy to post-partum recovery.
- The Materna range includes solutions for pre-conception, pregnancy, and post-birth recovery.
- Over a decade of research, including 17 patents, supports the expanded range.
- The NiPPeR clinical trial informed the development of key products.
- The initial launch is in China, with plans for expansion to Brazil and other countries in 2026.
Building on the 2023 launch of Materna Expert Preconception Support, the company has introduced Materna Expert Healthy Pregnancy and Materna Expert Post-Birth Recovery. This staged approach aims to deliver science-based nutrition tailored to each phase of motherhood.
The Science Behind the Support
More than ten years of research, resulting in 17 patents and over 20 peer-reviewed publications, underpins the expanded Materna range, reinforcing a commitment to long-term innovation in maternal health. Findings from the NiPPeR clinical trial were instrumental in developing Materna Expert Preconception Support and Materna Expert Healthy Pregnancy.
The NiPPeR study followed women from pre-conception through pregnancy and post-birth, testing a nutritional blend containing probiotics, myo-inositol, and vitamins. Secondary analysis revealed a positive impact on maternal micronutrient status, improved peripartum health outcomes, and a potential association with reduced risk of high weight gain and obesity in children by age two.
Recovery and Replenishment
Materna Expert Post-Birth Recovery completes the portfolio, focusing on a mother’s needs after delivery. It’s designed to support tissue recovery, boost energy levels, and provide essential nutrients for breastfeeding, while also helping mothers replenish nutrients for their own wellbeing and their baby’s health.
Isabelle Bureau-Franz, Head of R&D for Nutrition, stated: “These innovations reflect our unwavering commitment to science-led solutions and our strategic focus on women’s health, a key growth platform. These launches are the result of more than a decade of rigorous research through public-private partnerships demonstrating how tailored nutrition can transform health outcomes for mothers and babies and deliver measurable benefits that last well beyond birth.”
Serena Aboutboul, Head of the Nutrition Business, added: “At Nestlé, we are dedicated to empowering women with the very best nutritional support throughout every stage of motherhood. This further expansion of our Materna range reflects our commitment to translating world-class science into practical solutions that support women at key stages of the motherhood journey. These are not just products; they represent our promise to champion women’s well-being and nurture future generations.”
The staged Materna approach launched first in China, the world’s second-largest country by annual pregnancies, through cross-border e-commerce under the Wyeth brand. Nestlé introduced Materna Preconception Support in Brazil last year and plans further country launches in 2026.
