Matt Hardy on TNA & AMC Premiere: Response to Criticism

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

NEW YORK, March 8, 2024 – TNA Wrestling’s recent debut on AMC drew a mixed reaction, with some viewers criticizing the pacing and a noticeable absence of matches from the X Division during the premiere episode. The move to AMC represents a significant expansion for the wrestling promotion, but initial impressions suggest adjustments are needed.

First Impressions & Production Hurdles

TNA’s foray onto a major network faced immediate scrutiny regarding its execution.

matt Hardy addressed the feedback on his podcast, The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, acknowledging that while AMC representatives expressed satisfaction with the broadcast, areas for betterment were identified. He explained that unexpected visa issues forced a significant reshuffling of the card, ultimately impacting the final presentation.

“I think I do know that the AMC people were very happy with it,” Hardy said. “I think the AMC people were blown away by the chaotic scene of doing a two-hour live wrestling show… I think there was some realy good stuff on it. I think there were also some issues that had happened with the visa situations that made there be a lot of rebooking in the card. But once again, it was our first time out, and it wasn’t perfect. I think we could have maybe switched up the pacing on some stuff a little more. We could have been a little more, kept things a little tighter.”

The X Division’s Absence

What was the biggest criticism leveled against TNA’s AMC debut? The lack of an X Division match, despite a video package celebrating the division’s history, was a key point of contention. Hardy conceded that this criticism was valid, emphasizing the X Division’s importance to TNA’s identity.

“I think that’s a fair criticism,” Hardy admitted. “Because I think X division is another thing that was the heart and soul… I woudl like to see the X Division. I would like to see a more stable and consistent X Division… try and bring that back as one of the things that TNA was… a huge selling point.”

Looking Ahead: A Work in Progress

Hardy characterized TNA’s evolution on AMC as an ongoing process, anticipating weekly learning opportunities. He expressed a desire for more compelling storylines and the progress of strong contenders for the world title, as well as opportunities to showcase emerging talent.

“I think it’s going to be a work in progress, man,” Hardy said.”I think we’re going to be learning every single week… I would like to see a really compelling story. And, like, two or three real serious contenders to the world title… I would like to see stories of, like, these new guys. I would like to see a new guy come in… and like, follow the journey of this guy.”
