Matthew lillard Addresses Quentin Tarantino’s Criticism: “It F*ing Sucks”
A candid response from the Scream and Five Nights at Freddy’s star reveals the sting of being publicly dismissed by the acclaimed director. This week, Quentin Tarantino sparked controversy with a series of blunt assessments of actors, including Matthew Lillard, Owen Wilson, and Paul Dano.
The controversy began earlier this week when Tarantino appeared on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast to discuss his 20 favorite films of the 21st century. During the conversation,he stated that There Will Be Blood could have been his top pick if not for the performance of Paul Dano, whom he described as a “giant flaw” in the film. He then went on to express his general disinterest in the work of Wilson and Lillard, stating, “I don’t care for him [Paul Dano], I don’t care for Owen Wilson, and I don’t care for Matthew Lillard.”
lillard addressed the unexpected criticism during a fan event at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday. According to reports from Entertainment Weekly, Lillard initially responded with seeming nonchalance, saying, “quentin Tarantino this week said he didn’t like me as an actor.Eh,whatever.Who gives a st?”
however,he quickly revealed the emotional impact of the director’s words. “The point is,is that,it hurts your feelings. It f***ing sucks,” lillard admitted. He further elaborated on the disparity between his reception in Hollywood versus among his dedicated fanbase. “And he wouldn’t say that to Tom Cruise. He wouldn’t say that to somebody who’s a top-line actor in Hollywood. I’m very popular in this room. I am not very popular in Hollywood. Two totally diffrent microcosms, right? And so,you know,it’s humbling, and it hurts.”
The audience responded with overwhelming support, with shouts of “We love you!” erupting throughout the room.
Despite feeling somewhat marginalized within the industry, Lillard has a robust slate of upcoming projects. He recently completed work on Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and is set to reprise his role as Stu Macher in Scream 7. He will also appear as a villain in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
Tarantino’s comments also drew criticism from fans and fellow actors defending Paul Dano, whose performance in There Will Be Blood has been widely praised. The director recently collaborated with Fortnite on Kill Bill: The Lost Chapter – Yuki’s Revenge, an anime adaptation of a cut scene from Kill Bill, which premiered within the popular battle royale game.
