U.S. Treasury with coins bearing the image of poet and social activist Maya Angelou. Maya Angelo thus becomes the first black woman to appear on a US 25 cent coin known as a quarter. Gakari was also the first black man to write and perform poetry during Angelo’s presidency.
As part of the American Women’s Quarters program, it plans to add other prominent women to the coin, including an astronaut, a tribal leader and an actress. The move was made by the country’s first woman treasury secretary. “Every time we redesign our currency, we have the opportunity to tell the community something important about our country. Why do we value value. That fact must be taken into account. ”
Angelo, a social activist and author, died in 2014 at the age of 86. She is best known for her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Birds Sings (I Know Why the Caged Singing in the Cage), written in 1969, about her childhood in the Deep South. He later went on to earn several honorary degrees and wrote more than 30 works. In 2010, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This is the highest civilian honor in the US.
The new quarterback portrays Angelo with open and outstretched arms. Behind them can be seen a flying bird and the rising sun, which, inspired by their poetry, represent the life they lived, the U.S. Treasury Department said. The U.S. Mint plans to release 20 more Quarters over the next four years, depicting other American women who have played a key role in the country’s history.
Sally Ride, the first woman astronaut in the United States, Wilma Mankiller, the first woman commander of the Cherokee Nation and a local rights activist, and Anna May Wong, considered the first Chinese-American film star in Hollywood, are among those who plan to be included in the quarterfinals.
