DIG/ The State and the oil company Pérenco signed, on Tuesday March 19, 2024, the memorandum of understanding for the construction of the IPP Mayumba gas-fired thermal power plant, in the Nyanga province,

The stakeholders, notably the Gabonese State, were represented by the Minister of Energy Jeannot KALIMA; the Minister of Economy and Participations Mays MOUISSI; the Minister of Public Accounts Charles M’BA; the Minister of Oil Marcel ABEKE, and the General Director of Gabon Power Company (GPC), Philippe Jr. OSSOUCAH.

The installed electrical capacity in southern Gabon is currently insufficient to meet the electricity needs of the population as well as industrialists in this region of the country.

This deficit, mainly attributable to the dilapidated production facilities which mainly run on diesel, has recently led to an energy crisis in the hinterland.

Considering this emergency, the Transitional Government and its partners, notably Gabon Power Company (GPC), a subsidiary of the Gabonese Strategic Investment Fund (FGIS), and Perenco, have decided to revise the project protocol for the IPP MAYUMBA gas-fired thermal power plant, in order to carry out a first phase by 2025 which will produce nearly 10 MW.

During the work phases, the project will create 450 direct jobs, with priority given to the local workforce.

Once commissioned, the plant will be able to supply 80,000 homes connected to the electricity network in southern Gabon.

Furthermore, this energy infrastructure will make it possible to relaunch the long-awaited major projects in the mining, forestry and port sectors, notably that of the deep water port of Mayumba.
