MCA Leaders Walk Out Over Barisan Nasional Seat Allocation in Melaka

Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional have formalised their political cooperation for the November 14 Melaka state election, following a seat dispute that led to an MCA walkout. The agreement, announced ahead of the October 31 nomination day, pairs a joint campaign machinery and manifesto while leaving seven constituencies to PAS and its allies.

A routine political gathering in Melaka quickly transformed into an internal coalition crisis when Barisan Nasional unveiled its candidate lineup on October 24. Malaysian Chinese Association leaders, expecting only a machinery launch at the Melaka International Trade Centre, discovered that seats traditionally contested by the party had been reassigned without their consent.

MCA president Wee Ka Siong led a walkout alongside deputy president Mah Hang Soon and representatives from six local divisions, telling reporters that his party cannot be pushed around and deserved basic consultation after decades of loyalty. The unexpected candidate announcement revealed that MCA had been reduced from contesting seven seats down to just two: Machap Jaya and Klebang which were won by the party in the 2021 election.

Barisan Nasional Reserves Seven Seats for PAS Partners

Behind the friction over candidate slots lies a broader realignment between Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional. Barisan Nasional is slated to contest 21 of the 28 available state seats, while reserving seven constituencies for PAS and its political partners under terms reached between the coalitions.

Political analysts observing the negotiations suggest that MCA’s bargaining room remains constrained. Former deputy international trade and industry minister Ong Kian Ming noted that the party’s electoral fortunes rely heavily on cooperation with UMNO and PAS to secure Malay support across state and federal contests.

MCA knows that its fortunes are tied together with UMNO and even PAS, in terms of winning the Malay vote, in order for it to win the state seats in Melaka and, more importantly, state and parliamentary seats in GE16.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the cooperation was formally endorsed. Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi witnessed the developments. Commentators noted that MCA had previously given up seats in the Negeri Sembilan state election and wondered if similar concessions would occur in Melaka, where the state constitution allows for up to seven nominated assembly members.

MCA Accepts Two Allocated Seats After Settlement

Following subsequent talks in Kuala Lumpur between Wee, the Barisan Nasional secretary-general, and Ab Rauf, party leadership stepped back from a permanent break following discussions. Ab Rauf confirmed that the internal dispute had reached a settlement after an UMNO Supreme Council meeting at Menara Dato Onn.

MCA agreed to accept the two allocated seats—Machap Jaya and Klebang—with incumbents Ngwe Hee Sem and Lim Ban Hong returning to defend them under assurances that Chinese representation in the state government would be preserved and enhanced.

Umno Supreme Council Endorses Joint Campaign Strategy

With internal disputes managed, the coalitions turned their focus to upcoming electoral milestones. The Umno Supreme Council formally endorsed the joint arrangement, instructing all election machinery to campaign under a unified strategy without resorting to slander or insults against opponents.

Clear instructions were given by leadership to ensure that everyone concentrates strictly on the 21 constituencies contested by Barisan Nasional and that all campaign machinery works effectively to defend those seats. Pakatan Harapan also announced its candidates, while Perikatan Nasional separately advanced its own candidate selections for the upcoming polls.
