McDonald’s Price Discrepancies in Norway Spark Consumer Outrage

Customers are expressing frustration after discovering significant price variations for the same menu items at different McDonald’s locations across Norway, particularly between restaurants in Oslo and the Romerike region.

The perception that McDonald’s maintains uniform pricing nationwide has been shattered by revelations that a Big Mac can cost as little as NOK 77 at the Alnabru location in Oslo, but NOK 90 at several restaurants in Romerike. The price difference, uncovered through the chain’s own mobile app, is fueling accusations of unfair pricing practices.

Outside a McDonald’s in Lillestrøm, two 16-year-olds voiced their surprise and discontent. “No, we didn’t know that,” said one, identified as nithurshan Pulendran. His friend, Brother Herman Grøtter, added, “It’s quiet incredible.” When informed of the NOK 13 price difference for a Big Mac, both expressed irritation.”It is absolutely sick, they are robbing us,” Pulendran stated. “You can spend the 13 kroner on so many other things.” Grøtter commented, “Then I could almost buy a drink on the side.”

A small Big Mac menu illustrates the disparity, costing NOK 113 in Alnabru but NOK 131 in Lillestrøm. This inconsistency has led many to question the fast-food giant’s pricing strategy.

Franchisees Hold the Key to Pricing

The discrepancies stem from a decentralized pricing model, where individual franchisees determine prices based on local conditions. Frank Wilhelmsen, a franchisee operating six McDonald’s restaurants in the Romerike area, confirmed that prices are higher at his locations compared to Alnabru. Though, he declined to elaborate on the specific factors driving this decision.

In an email, Wilhelmsen explained that “this pricing is done by each individual franchisee,” and that “the price level will therefore vary between the restaurants based on local cost conditions and market assessments.” He further stated that sharing detailed cost and pricing strategies would reveal “competitively sensitive facts.” He acknowledged that the McDonald’s restaurant at Gardermoen, owned directly by the chain, maintains pricing consistent with Alnabru.

Brand Damage Concerns

The price variations are not only frustrating customers but also raising concerns about potential damage to the McDonald’s brand. Alexander Schjøll, a researcher at OsloMet specializing in food, prices, and consumer behavior, believes the inconsistencies are illogical to consumers. “The rent is much higher in Oslo, which in isolation should speak for higher prices,” Schjøll noted. “Though, the competition is much tougher in oslo with many places selling hamburgers and many restaurants selling other fast food. That will push the price down.”

Schjøll also criticized McDonald’s marketing practices, pointing out the contradiction between advertised fixed prices and the actual price variations within the app.”I think it is problematic. People who have seen an advertisement expect to pay what the advertisement says,” he said. “This is perceived as a mistake by consumers because the price is something other than what is imagined. It will primarily hurt McDonalds itself as customers will be dissatisfied, which will damage the brand.”

McDonald’s Remains Silent

Despite the public availability of price data in the McDonald’s app, McDonald’s Norway declined to comment on the reasons behind the regional price differences. Jørgen Talhaug, a communications advisor for the company, stated in an email that “pricing is done locally, and not centrally,” and that the company would not be offering further comment on the matter.

The lack of openness from the corporate office is likely to further fuel consumer frustration as customers navigate a complex and inconsistent pricing landscape.
