The actor will be on TV from 30 September in prime time on Canale 5 with the series Viola come il mare: It wasn’t easy to start from scratch, but I was determined

There are actors, there are much loved actors and then there is Can Yaman
, which deserves a separate phenomenology. From Turkey (where he was born 32 years ago) to Italy (where, for some years, it has become very popular), followed by legions of fans (ten million only on Instagram) who not only appreciate him, but true him, they know every detail of his life, they wait for him during his travels hoping to see him but, above all, to touch him: a shoulder, hair, whatever. Beautiful, indeed for all beautiful, he – from 30 September on Canale 5 in prime time as an inspector in his new series,
Purple like the sea

– gently resizes: It is the others who always remind me that I am beautiful, if it were for me, you will have already forgotten. And, indeed, it increases. Did beauty help me in my work? If I hadn’t been beautiful I would have been even more successful.

Admit that a sentence that is difficult to believe …

We need to go beyond prejudice. There are people more beautiful than me, but if the appearance is not accompanied by other virtues such as tenacity, grit, discipline and determination, it does not go far. Beauty alone is not enough, as is talent. Many dream of acting, perhaps even abroad, but I don’t know how many are really willing to leave everything: home, family, loved ones and start from scratch in a new country, speaking a new language.

You speak five languages: what is it?

My mother was obsessed. There is a saying in Turkey that says that if you speak one language you are one person, if you speak two you are two people … an enrichment linked to the ability to understand others. This is why I went to high school in Italian, an elitist but necessary choice for my parents.

How was school going?

I was really nerd. My dad’s job (lawyer, mother teacher, ndr.) was getting worse and worse. I felt so stuck that I was looking for a way out and that was education. Improving myself was the only escape. My parents told me that they could move me to another school because of the costs and this encouraged me: I finished the course excelling, I was the best in the school. My average, 92.57 per cent, remains the record. They never got past me.

Determined.

I had a crazy ambition. I was friends with an Albanian boy: a genius. With him we read not only the books of the Italian school, but those of the American schools, with the dream of studying in America. And then we liked philosophy: Plato, Aristotle … together we spoke in Italian.

Why had he chosen the Italian high school?

Many minorities live in Istanbul, so there are many foreign high schools. Everyone chose the French or German one. But I wanted to do something rare. I have always liked Italian culture: I liked everything, from architecture to cooking to machines. Then fate, ironic, brought me here. And knowing the language proved crucial.

Did you envision yourself as a lawyer in your future?

Studying Law was my father’s idea, but he convinced me in five minutes. For him, knowing the rules meant opening every door to me, structuring me. As for projects, it is said that God laughs in your face when you have them. When I started working as a lawyer I realized that practice differs from theory and this disappointed me.

What do you mean?

It was not the right job for my character: I am one who avoids problems, not one who solves them. And I like to mind my own business, not those of others. Much less arguing. Being an actor more like me.

And how did you find out?

The first series I shot in Turkey came a bit by chance and I realized it was the job I wanted to do. I don’t think about the long term, I do one thing at a time, because even dreams when they get serious get heavy and I don’t like to stress myself. Now I hope that Purple like the sea smash the screen, after which I shoot a new series in English, in Budapest. For the future, I let time fill in the details.

Is your family happy for you?

A lot, especially my mother. For every success she cries and at her house there is a corner where she puts all my photos, it looks like a museum … or even a little bit of my funeral.
