More than 41,000 peopel have actively supported a petition calling for at least 1 billion euros in research funding for ME/CFS, Long Covid, and post-Vaccination Illness – conditions affecting an estimated 650,000 individuals. This groundswell of support has already yielded a significant victory, demonstrating the power of collective advocacy.
Funding Boost for Chronic Illness Research
A recent petition drive has spurred increased financial commitment from European governments to study debilitating post-viral and post-vaccination conditions.
- Initial Funding (Early 2025) – Only 15 million euros had been allocated for research into these conditions.
- New commitment (Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space) – 500 million euros will be committed over the next decade.
- Care Project Funding (Federal Ministry of Health) – An additional 118 million euros will be directed towards care projects for those affected, funded through 2028.
- Petition Goal – The petition continues to advocate for the original goal of 1 billion euros in research funding.
Early in 2025, the situation looked bleak, with a mere 15 million euros earmarked for research – a sum considered insufficient to offer genuine hope to those suffering. However, thanks to the petition’s momentum, the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space has pledged a substantial 500 million euros in funding over the coming ten years. Moreover, the Federal Ministry of Health is allocating an additional 118 million euros to support care projects for affected individuals until 2028. This represents a crucial first step, directly attributable to the dedication of those who signed and shared the petition.
What are the long-term effects of Long Covid and ME/CFS, and how much funding is truly needed to understand and treat these conditions? Advocates maintain that reaching the 1 billion euro target is essential for sustainable progress in basic research, clinical trials, and the development of new therapies.
