But emerging research suggests that for individuals carrying a specific gene linked to Alzheimer’s disease, regular consumption of meat—particularly red meat—may actually reduce their risk of developing the debilitating condition. The Role of Vitamin B12 and the Caution Regarding Processed Meats

The researchers hypothesize that the protective effect of meat consumption in APOE4 carriers may be linked to higher levels of vitamin B12. The National Institutes of Health notes that vitamin B12 is crucial for brain health and cognitive function, and deficiency can lead to memory problems, confusion, and impaired judgment. Meat, particularly red meat, is a rich source of this essential vitamin.

However, the study also revealed a critical distinction: the benefits were not observed with processed meats like bacon and sausage. In fact, a higher proportion of processed meat in the diet was associated with an *increased* risk of dementia, reinforcing existing recommendations to limit consumption of these foods.
