Mediated by Herzog and the knowledge of animals: negotiations for a compromise in the legal reform

by time news

Globes has learned that negotiations to reach a compromise on the legal reform have actually begun. In the conversations and meetings of President Yitzhak Herzog with Simcha Rothman and Yariv Levin on the one hand, and with Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid on the other, there are compromise formulas on the table regarding all the reform’s articles.

President Herzog updates Supreme Court President Esther Hayut on the progress of the talks. We will recall that over 150 businessmen, society, economy and academia announced their support for the negotiations in the President’s outline.

Globes learned that the parties were asked to give their comments to President Herzog’s compromise outline, and at least some of the comments have already been given. However, both sides have arguments and disputes among themselves.

On the coalition side, Aryeh Deri is the leading marker for negotiations, and surprisingly also elements of religious Zionism, who were given permission to do so in a rabbinic letter this week. Levin continues to lead a more hawkish line that opposes fundamental changes. Against this background, it was announced that if there are changes that are not to his liking, he will consider leaving his position, but his office vehemently denies this.

On the other side, Gantz is the leader for talks, while Lapid sets rigid preconditions. However, even with him, they are already examining and responding to the various compromise formulations.

Rothman pledged to bring the first two bills to a first reading on Monday, but according to what Globes knows, there is a possibility of another postponement, in case there is progress in the closed talks. Approval in the first reading will seriously damage the chances of success of Herzog’s move.
