South Tyrol Bolsters Hospital Leadership with Key Appointments for 2026

A strategic realignment of leadership has been completed across four key hospitals in South Tyrol, Italy, ensuring stability and a clear vision for the coming years. The appointments, finalized by resolution of the General Director on December 23, 2025, position experienced medical professionals to guide healthcare delivery in Bolzano, Brixen, Brunico, and Merano.

Continuity and New Leadership in South Tyrol’s Healthcare System

The South Tyrolean medical company has reaffirmed its commitment to experienced leadership, retaining Dr. Monika Zäbisch, Dr. Valter Ciarrocchi, and Dr. Roberta Vanzetta in their respective roles overseeing hospitals in Bolzano, Merano, and Bruneck. However, a notable change comes to the Brixen Hospital, where Dr. Rosanna Loss will assume the position of medical director.

These appointments are designed to sustainably strengthen the management structure of the region’s healthcare facilities, according to a company release.

Dr. Monika Zäbisch: Bolzano’s Steadfast Leader

Dr. Zäbisch’s extensive career within the South Tyrolean medical company began in 1995. She initially served as medical director of the Bruneck Hospital in January 2013, quickly adding the role of deputy medical coordinator to her responsibilities. In July 2018, she transitioned to the Bolzano Hospital’s medical directorate, becoming executive medical director in July 2021 and deputy medical coordinator in November 2022. Her medical training was completed at the Catholic University in Rome, with a specialization in hygiene and preventive medicine.

Dr. Valter Ciarrocchi: Merano’s Experienced Director

Dr. Ciarrocchi brings a unique blend of experience to his role as medical director of the Merano Hospital. Born in Rome in 1964, he holds both Italian and German citizenship. He distinguished himself at the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” graduating with honors in medicine and surgery before specializing in hygiene and preventive medicine, as well as occupational medicine. His career began as a naval doctor in the Italian Navy, followed by valuable internships in both Italy and Germany. Since 1998, he has been a dedicated physician within the Bolzano health district, and has served as the executive medical director of the Meran Hospital since 2019.

Dr. Rosanna Loss: New Vision for Brixen Hospital

Dr. Loss’s appointment to the Brixen Hospital marks a new chapter for the facility. Her background includes studies in medicine at the University of Verona and a specialization in hygiene and preventive medicine. She gained significant experience at the Giessen University Hospital in Germany, as well as medical facilities in the provinces of Verona and Brescia. Prior to her new role, Dr. Loss served in the medical directorates of both the Bruneck and Bolzano Hospitals, and from January 2020 to February 2023, she chaired the medical company’s ethics committee for clinical examinations and testing.

Dr. Roberta Vanzetta: Bruneck’s Continuing Expertise

Dr. Vanzetta, who will continue to lead the Bruneck Hospital, completed her medical studies at the University of Verona in 2008, specializing in hygiene and preventive medicine. She previously worked in the province of Trento before joining the South Tyrolean medical company in 2016. She assumed the medical directorate of the Bruneck Hospital in 2021, and has also served as the coordinator of the company-wide working group for the review of medical care (NUVAS), and currently coordinates the working group focused on controlling patient waiting times.

Leadership Praises Stability and Experience

“I am pleased that the South Tyrolean medical company can continue to count on these experienced and competent managers,” stated a senior official. “Dr. Zäbisch, Dr. Ciarrocchi and Dr. Vanzetta know their respective hospitals and teams very well and thus guarantee continuity. Dr. Loss has already worked in the medical directorates in Bruneck and Bolzano, which will certainly benefit her in her new role.”

Another company leader added, “I warmly congratulate the new managers on their appointment, thank them for the good cooperation so far and wish them much success and joy in their very complex and responsible work as medical directors of the hospitals, in the service and for the benefit of our patients.”

These appointments signal a period of sustained leadership and strategic focus for the South Tyrolean medical company, poised to address the evolving healthcare needs of the region.
