Medtronic Hosts ‘Very Important Patients’ for Behind-the-Scenes Look at Life-Changing Devices

A rare and deeply moving event unfolded this week in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, as Medtronic welcomed a group of patients from around the globe for an exclusive tour of its facilities. These weren’t typical VIPs; they were individuals whose lives had been profoundly altered by the company’s medical technologies, a testament to the human impact behind the innovation.

A Personal Connection to Innovation

The annual tradition allows Medtronic to connect the engineers and technicians who build their devices with the people who directly benefit from them. This year’s group included patients like Morgon Latimore, a retired Marine from North Carolina, and Grace Morris, a 16-year-old from Australia. For Latimore, the tour centered around the Interstim device, which has provided relief from a debilitating overactive bladder.

“This is the Interstim?” Latimore asked, pointing to the device during the tour. “That’s it, right there.”

Latimore explained that for years, he concealed his condition out of fear it would impact his military service. “For years, I couldn’t tell my command or people that I was having bladder issues because they wouldn’t let me go serve,” he said. “And so I had to hide it. It got to the point that I couldn’t sleep because I would wake up every 20 minutes.” The ability to regain control of his life, thanks to the Medtronic device, made the trip to Minnesota deeply meaningful.

Beyond the Technology: The Human Element

The visit wasn’t simply a factory tour. It was an opportunity for patients to express their gratitude to the people who dedicate their careers to improving lives. According to a VP of Research and Development for Medtronic, Jason Case, “We have a room full of 100 people that have, in one way or another, actually touched those specific devices. It’s really just a compelling moment to bring it to life.”

This direct connection resonated powerfully with the patients. Latimore emphasized the importance of the people behind the technology, stating, “You know, robots are cool, factories are cool, but the people are the coolest.” He was particularly touched by the longevity of the Medtronic workforce, meeting employees with 20, 30, and even 40 years of service. “They’re shaking my hand, they’re giving me hugs and they just, they’re excited about sharing with me their experience on how they worked on my device. I mean, that’s priceless.”

A Second Chance at Life

For Grace Morris, the journey was particularly poignant. She had relied on a Medtronic tracheostomy tube for 14 years, a lifeline that allowed her to breathe. “It means so much,” Morris shared. “If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here right now. It was only supposed to be for a few months. It ended up being 14 years with it.”

Now able to live without the tube, Morris expressed her newfound freedom. “Before I came here, to Minneapolis, I never even left the state of New South Wales,” she said. “So that’s a massive step.” The experience broadened her perspective, leading her to appreciate not only the devices themselves but also the meticulous care and dedication of the Medtronic team. “It’s changed everything,” Morris said. “How I see myself, how I see others… just seeing all the machinery and the and all the people scrubbed up and taking time to make sure it’s just right. It was mind-blowing.”

A Profound Expression of Gratitude

The visit culminated in a reception where the patients could personally thank the Medtronic employees. Both Morris and Latimore offered heartfelt expressions of gratitude. “I can’t thank everyone enough,” Morris told the crowd. Latimore’s message was equally direct and impactful: “You’re not just making devices but you’re saving lives. I want to say thank you, and that’s all I got.”

The event served as a powerful reminder of the profound impact medical technology can have on individuals and the importance of recognizing the human element behind every innovation.
