Megan Thee Stallion Prioritizes Artistic Freedom, Steps Back From Chart Battles
Megan Thee Stallion is refocusing her energy on creative fulfillment, distancing herself from the pressures of maintaining chart dominance. The Grammy-winning rapper recently shared her evolving perspective during a candid conversation at Taraji P. Henson’s I Am the Table Benefit Brunch, expressing a desire to create music on her own terms, rather than chasing numbers.
The 30-year-old artist acknowledged her competitive spirit, stating, “Of course, I’m competitive. Of course, rap is competitive, and hell yeah, I wanna win. I wanna be number one, for sure, but that’s not why I do it.” She explained that she once felt compelled to engage in online debates with fans regarding her chart performance, but has since rejected that approach. “I felt like, at a point, to please my fans because I love that my fans are very competitive, but I don’t wanna be tongue-wrestling on Twitter with you motherf**kers about charting. And y’all don’t even like my music.”
This shift in mindset comes after a period of feeling obligated to constantly strive for the top spot. According to the artist, she previously believed she “had to make music because I gotta be number one. I gotta chart, I gotta do this.” Now, however, she’s embracing a more liberated approach. “Now, I’m like, you know what? [No] I’m gonna drop music when I feel like it. If you rock with me as Megan Thee Stallion, if you a hottie, thank you so much.”
Beyond her music, Megan Thee Stallion continues to demonstrate a commitment to social advocacy. Earlier this month, she was honored by The Trevor Project with the 2025 Mental Health Champion of the Year Award in recognition of World Mental Health Day.
Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, lauded the rapper’s impact in a press statement, stating, “Megan Thee Stallion is a mental health champion in every sense of the word. Her raw honesty, bold advocacy, and deep love for her community make her an extraordinary role model – particularly for Black LGBTQ+ youth, who face some of the highest rates of discrimination, mental health challenges, and suicide risk.” Black further emphasized the tangible impact of her work, noting, “Megan’s activism doesn’t just stop at words; she builds real, tangible resources for vulnerable communities that are too often overlooked or left behind.”
Megan Thee Stallion’s dedication extends to her home state of Texas, where she will host her annual Hottieween celebration later this month. Tickets for the event, which go on sale Wednesday, October 15, will benefit her Pete & Thomas Foundation.
