Melaka Polls Could Be Held As Early As October 31 Says Ab Rauf

Melaka voters could head to the polls as early as October 31, 2026, according to caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. The Election Commission is scheduled to meet on October 7 to set the official timetable following the dissolution of the state legislative assembly.

Voters in Melaka might cast their ballots in the state election as soon as the final day of October, caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh outlined three possible election timetables. The scheduling decisions rest with the Election Commission, which will convene a special meeting on October 7, 2026, to determine the official dates for the 16th state election.

The legislative assembly dissolution took effect on September 23, 2026, after Ab Rauf secured the formal consent of Melaka Governor Tun Mohd Ali Rustam. Barisan Nasional governed the state previously after securing 21 of the 28 seats in the 2021 election, while Pakatan Harapan won five and Perikatan Nasional claimed two.

Three Potential Election Schedules Outlined by Ab Rauf

The caretaker administration has mapped out three distinct calendar options for the upcoming campaign and voting cycle. The earliest scenario features nomination day on October 17 followed by polling on October 31. A second possibility proposes nomination on October 24 and polling on November 7.

Political parties across the state are already mobilizing their machinery. Pakatan Harapan election director Amirudin Shari stated that his coalition has maintained preparations for two months and expects to announce candidates within the next fortnight. Meanwhile, Melaka Umno has instructed six division chiefs to submit three potential candidates per seat, encompassing both incumbent assemblymen and new faces, as part of an early screening process.

Strategic Delays and Alliance Talks Across Political Blocs

Barisan Nasional has postponed its scheduled discussions regarding political cooperation and coalition partners for the state polls. Observers suggest the pause is a calculated maneuver. Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan noted that the delay allows BN to keep its options open while negotiating a broader political pact ahead of the 16th general election. According to analysts, Umno is utilizing its flexibility to strengthen its bargaining position with Perikatan Nasional and PAS.

At the same time, Pakatan Harapan faces internal divisions over potential cooperation. Malacca DAP chairperson Khoo Poay Tiong rejected any possibility of reviving ties with Bersatu, citing the fallout from the 2020 Sheraton Move. Khoo described cooperation with Bersatu as a red line that should not be crossed during an interview on a local podcast. Despite differing views among component parties, Pakatan Harapan leaders maintain that any formal electoral agreement requires approval from the coalition’s Presidential Council led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Pakatan Harapan communication director Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil noted that any decisions on electoral cooperation must first be referred to the Presidential Council unless authority has been delegated to the state leadership. Amanah communications director Khalid Samad stated that his coalition was open to working with any party except Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional, though Melaka Amanah chief Ashraf Mukhlis Minghat dismissed these remarks as personal views.

Barisan Nasional Prepares Candidate Screening and Campaign Machinery

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan suggested that Barisan Nasional should unveil its candidate slate ahead of schedule to give nominees adequate time to engage voters.

Selected candidates will face a three-tier screening process before the top party leadership issues a final endorsement. Caretaker Chief Minister Ab Rauf emphasized that Barisan enters the race relying on its track record, pointing to the state’s Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat outreach program, which operated across all 28 constituencies over the preceding three years.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that talks regarding the coalition’s approach to the state election remain ongoing at the leadership level. Ab Rauf previously announced that the state government received seven awards under the 2025 Public Complaints Recognition initiative presented by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, highlighting administrative commitment across the constituencies.

As political parties weigh whether to contest independently or forge strategic electoral pacts, the Election Commission’s upcoming decisions will establish the definitive timeline for the campaign.
