Melania Trump’s Documentary Set to Premiere,Offering Rare Glimpse Behind the Scenes
Melania Trump is capping her first year back as first lady with the global release of a self-produced documentary offering an unprecedented look at the 20 days leading up to her husband Donald Trump’s return to the White House. The film, titled “Melania,” will premiere Thursday at the Kennedy center, with the Trumps expected to walk the red carpet before a worldwide theatrical release on Friday, following a private viewing held at the White House last Saturday.
The first lady explained that the idea for the documentary originated after her husband secured his 2024 election victory, envisioning it as a way to provide viewers with a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective on her life during a pivotal moment. “My new film, ‘Melania,’ provides a window into an meaningful period for America, the 47th presidential inauguration,” she stated Wednesday while ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. “For the first time in history, people will witness the 20 days leading up to the inauguration, thru the eyes of an incoming first lady.”
Despite serving as first lady during a second term, Melania Trump remains a relatively enigmatic figure to the public. She has intentionally maintained a degree of privacy, a characteristic she detailed in her 2024 self-titled memoir. This approach, coupled with a less frequent public presence compared to some of her predecessors, has contributed to varying public perceptions. However, as she noted, she prefers to operate on her own terms.
Public opinion regarding the first lady is divided. A CNN poll conducted in January 2025 revealed that roughly 40% of U.S. adults held no opinion or had not even heard of her. Approximately 30% viewed her favorably, while a similar percentage held an unfavorable opinion.
Despite her reserved public persona, the first lady has demonstrated a willingness to engage on the international stage, she also penned a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, seeking his assistance in reuniting children separated from their families due to the conflict in Ukraine. the letter was personally delivered by the president during a meeting in Alaska, and she later announced the prosperous reunification of eight children with their families.
The first lady has also been a visible presence alongside the president during visits to disaster zones, offering support to victims. Moreover, she has taken a leading role in the governance’s efforts concerning artificial intelligence and education, and has expanded the foster child program globally. At a White House Christmas reception, she hinted at a new legislative initiative planned for 2026, details of which remain undisclosed.
A Unique Project and Potential Financial Implications
The production of “Melania” spanned over a year and its financial implications remain largely unclear. Experts have noted the unusual nature of a first lady undertaking such a project from the White house, though they acknowledge it aligns with the Trumps’ history of unconventional ventures. “As far as I know, she’s the first first lady to be paid a lot of money to have a documentary made about her and it is unprecedented in terms of the Trumps because they are always breaking precedent,” observed Katherine Jellison, professor emerita of history at Ohio University.
traditionally, presidents and first ladies avoid pursuing outside business interests while in office to mitigate potential conflicts of interest and ethical concerns. However, both trumps actively engage in various business ventures, offering a range of products including watches, fragrances, jewelry, and digital collectibles.
The documentary also strengthens ties between the Trumps and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has worked to mend a previously strained relationship with the president. Produced by AmazonMGM Studios at a reported cost of $40 million, “Melania” will be exclusively available on Amazon Prime Video following its theatrical run. Amazon has not disclosed any financial arrangements related to the project.
The film is slated for release in approximately 1,600 screens worldwide, including 1,500 in the United States. A premiere simulcast will be held in 21 theaters nationwide on Thursday for invited guests, building anticipation for the launch. The project marks the first directorial effort by Brett Ratner since facing allegations of sexual misconduct in the early days of the #metoo movement; Ratner’s lawyer has denied these allegations. He shares producer credits with the first lady, Beckman, and Fernando Sulichin of New Element Media. Filming commenced in december 2024.
