Oakland Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season at Bentwater Intercollegiate
The Oakland Golden Grizzlies begin the spring portion of their season at the Bentwater Intercollegiate, aiming to build on a successful fall campaign and challenge for the Horizon League title.
The Bentwater Intercollegiate will be held Monday, February 9, and Tuesday, February 10, at the Bentwater Country Club in Texas. A shotgun start is scheduled for 8 a.m. Central Time each day, with the tournament consisting of 54 holes played over three rounds.
A Competitive Field Awaits
Fourteen teams will participate in the invitational, including Baylor, Central Arkansas, East Texas A&M, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Oakland, Ohio, Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston, SE Louisiana, Southern, Tarleton State, Texas Southern, and VCU. This marks Oakland’s first appearance in the event, which is hosted by Sam Houston.
Fall Performance Fuels Spring Ambitions
During the fall season, the Golden Grizzlies demonstrated their competitive edge, facing both Ohio and VCU in previous invitationals. Oakland outperformed Ohio in both the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate and the Purdue Fall Invite, exceeding the Bobcats’ scores by three and ten strokes, respectively. While the team finished eight strokes behind VCU, these early-season matchups provided valuable experience.
Golden Grizzlies Lineup and League Ranking
Matteo Rocco, Ellis Kinnaird, Luke Kelly, Jack Zubkus, and Brennan Sullivan will represent Oakland at the Bentwater Intercollegiate. The team’s strong fall performance has translated into a second-place ranking in the Horizon League Preseason Polls, trailing only last year’s champion, Wright State.
With two top-three finishes already under their belts, the Golden Grizzlies are focused on continuing their momentum. The team is scheduled to tee off on holes four through seven, alongside golfers from Tarleton State and Central Arkansas.
