UNC Asheville Men’s Tennis Falls to North Carolina in Non-Conference Match
A decisive performance by the University of North Carolina Tar Heels resulted in a 4-0 defeat for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in a non-conference men’s tennis matchup on Tuesday, February 10th. The Tar Heels demonstrated their dominance, securing victories in both doubles and singles play.
Doubles Competition Sets the Tone
The Tar Heels quickly gained momentum by sweeping the doubles matches. Chris Xu and Nick Mangiapane of UNC defeated Harrison Cooper and Griffin Lovern of UNC Asheville with a score of 6-4. The doubles point was clinched by Roan Jones and Anthony Wright, who bested Cian Ingles and Daniel Franco-Key 6-2. Rounding out the doubles competition, the nationally ranked duo of Ian Mayew and Kase Schinnerer (ranked #89) secured a 6-1 victory over Trevor Gray and Yep Mens.
The order of finish in doubles was 3, 2, and 1, indicating a swift and commanding start for North Carolina.
Singles Play Seals the Victory
North Carolina continued its strong performance into the singles matches, securing the necessary points for the overall win. Roan Jones, ranked #104 nationally, defeated Daniel Franco-Key 6-3, 6-0. Constantinos Djakouris clinched the match for the Tar Heels with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Harrison Cooper. Kase Schinnerer added to the Tar Heels’ tally with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Trevor Gray.
Several singles matches remained unfinished, including a competitive contest between Chris Xu and Yep Mens (6-1, 5-4), and Ian Mayew versus Cian Ingles (6-2, 4-0). Anthony Wright was also leading Martin Fuchs 6-0, 3-4 when the match concluded. The order of finish in singles was 5, 2, and 4.
Bulldogs Look Ahead
Despite the loss, the UNC Asheville Bulldogs (2-1) will return to the court on Thursday, February 12th, hosting Mars Hill in another non-conference contest. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Asheville School.
