Mercury has contracted up to 30 percent more than previously estimated, losing up to 14.5 miles of its total diameter over 4.5 billion years. Researchers using data from NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft reported the findings, setting the stage for fresh observations when the BepiColombo mission enters orbit.

Our solar system’s smallest rocky planet is shrinking much faster than scientists previously calculated, bringing new questions about the deep interior of the innermost world. Mercury has been cooling down and contracting ever since its formation 4.5 billion years ago, buckling its outer crust into massive cliffs and mountainous ridges known as lobate scarps.

A study published in Geophysical Research Letters revealed that the planet’s total contraction is up to 30 percent greater than earlier models showed. That extra shrinkage amounts to a diameter loss of up to 14.5 miles, a significant adjustment for a world measuring roughly 3,000 miles across.

For decades, planetary scientists struggled to reconcile physical cooling models with observed surface tectonic features. The predicted amount of shrinking did not match what visible scarps and ridges suggested, leaving a persistent gap in researchers’ understanding of planetary evolution.

The discrepancy stems from how meteor impacts continuously hammer Mercury’s surface. A relentless barrage of space debris kicks up rubble and dust that settles across the landscape, burying fault lines and obscuring contraction features in rough terrain.

Researchers compared global maps of surface roughness against geological maps of shortening structures. They discovered that heavily cratered, rugged regions exhibited far fewer visible wrinkles than smoother areas, indicating that countless contraction features lie hidden beneath layers of impact ejecta.

By calculating contraction rates in less disrupted zones and applying those findings planet-wide, the team arrived at the updated loss of up to 14.5 miles in diameter.

What Accelerated Contraction Reveals About Mercury’s Iron Core

The corrected figures do more than update dimensions; they alter what scientists understand about the planet’s composition. Mercury possesses an unusually large metal core relative to its overall volume, surrounded by a thin mantle and crust.

A faster shrinkage rate indicates that this massive core holds fewer light elements, such as silicon, than previously assumed.

Furthermore, geologists examining NASA’s MESSENGER mission data identified small cracks, known as grabens, running parallel to fault lines. These formations, which resemble a piece of stiff toast cracking when bent, indicate that tectonic scarps have continued to shift within the last 300 million years. This ongoing movement generates seismic activity similar to moonquakes.

BepiColombo Mission Prepares to Enter Orbit in November

Researchers will not have to wait long to put the updated contraction models to the test. The BepiColombo spacecraft, a joint venture between the European Space Agency and Japan’s JAXA, is currently advancing toward the innermost planet after shedding its cruising platform.

The mission is scheduled to enter orbit around Mercury in November, after which its linked probes will separate to conduct high-resolution surveys. Equipped with advanced laser altimetry instruments, BepiColombo will map surface topography and fine-scale geological features, offering researchers a chance to verify hidden grabens, boulder tracks, and tectonic scarps.
