$55 Million Investment to Transform Cancer Care in Arkansas River Valley

Mercy Fort Smith is spearheading a meaningful expansion of it’s oncology services with a new $41 million cancer center, aiming to address critical gaps in local care and improve access for thousands of patients. The project, bolstered by an $8 million contribution from the Cherokee Nation, represents a major step forward in regional healthcare infrastructure.

A growing need for specialized cancer treatment has prompted this enterprising undertaking. Currently, 30% to 40% of individuals in the River Valley diagnosed with cancer – more than 5,000 people annually – are forced to seek care outside the area due to limited local options. This expansion seeks to reverse that trend, bringing world-class oncology services directly to the community.

Consolidating and Expanding Oncology Services

The new 40,000-square-foot facility will consolidate Mercy’s existing oncology services, currently located at 7001 Rogers Ave. This centralization will bring together radiation therapy and expanded infusion services into a single, state-of-the-art location. According to a statement from a senior official at Mercy Health Foundation Fort Smith, “We are excited to bring our cancer services together into one location, making it easier for patients and their families to access care. This project is historic and will positively impact thousands of patients each year.”

The center will be equipped with advanced technology, including upgraded linear accelerators, cutting-edge radiation technology, and enhanced imaging capabilities. Additional infusion chairs will be added to accommodate increasing patient demand.

Did you know?– Approximately 5,000 River Valley residents travel outside the area annually for cancer treatment due to limited local options. The new center aims to reverse this trend and provide care closer to home.

Addressing Health Disparities with Cherokee Nation Support

The Cherokee Nation’s $8 million contribution underscores its commitment to improving healthcare access for its citizens. Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “With this investment, we can better address long-standing health disparities, ensuring more Cherokee families have access to early diagnosis and advanced treatments close to home.” This partnership highlights a collaborative effort to tackle regional health challenges.

A Growing Healthcare Hub

This cancer center expansion builds upon recent investments in Mercy Fort Smith’s infrastructure. In May, the hospital opened a new $186 million emergency room and intensive care unit, which is already experiencing record patient volume. Thes developments reflect a broader strategy to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the River Valley.

Mercy has been proactively addressing the growing demand for cancer care, particularly as other local providers have reduced or closed their oncology services in recent years. “This expansion represents more than just a new building; it’s a step forward in bringing world-class care, hope, and healing to our community,” said Ryan Gehrig, president of Mercy Arkansas Communities. “Every patient and family in the River Valley will have access to the support that transforms lives right here at home.”

Staffing Increases and Project Timeline

Alongside the technological upgrades,Mercy is significantly expanding its oncology staff. The hospital plans to more than double the number of medical and radiation oncology physicians and advanced practise providers, and will also add surgical oncology specialists. Several new oncologists have already joined Mercy Fort Smith in anticipation of the center’s opening.

Construction will be managed by McCarthy of St. Louis, with design services provided by HKS of Dallas.Efforts will be made to minimize disruptions to patients during the construction phase. The project is slated for completion in the spring of 2027, with additional phases planned to bring the total investment to $55 million.
