MET brings art back to Cambodia

With flowers and blessings from Buddhist monks, Cambodia yesterday celebrated the return to the country of 14 Khmer works of art returned by the Metropolitan Art Museum (Met) of New York.

“The return of our national treasures, in the possession of the Met, is of utmost importance, not only for Cambodia but for all humanity,” said the Minister of Cultura, Phoeurng Sackona, quoted in a statement.

“We still have many treasures at the Met, which we hope will be returned to Cambodia”, he added.

Among the works returned to the national museum in Phnom Penh are a stone sculpture of a goddess, dating back to the 10th century, and a bronze figure of a famous Buddha, believed to date back to the 13th century. X to XII y It is considered extremely rare.

He Met, one of the largest and most prestigious museums in the world, announced in December that it would return the antiquities, following orders from the US justice system and police, who have been fighting international trafficking of works of art for years.
