Meta, OpenAI and xAI Launch Always-On AI Agents for Consumers

A new class of personal artificial intelligence assistants known as always-on agents debuted last month, operating independently in the cloud to manage emails, monitor prices, and handle routine digital errands for consumers across platforms developed by major technology companies.

Unlike traditional chatbots that require a direct question before generating a response, these persistent digital assistants run continuously on cloud computers. They can browse websites, track subscriptions, and execute instructions long after users close their applications, according to recent reporting on consumer AI tools.

Meta, OpenAI, and xAI Roll Out Consumer Assistants

Major technology firms have introduced user-friendly versions of these persistent digital helpers to the market. Meta launched its Muse assistant, OpenAI released its Dots platform, and xAI deployed its Grok Bot to bring cloud-based automation to everyday users, as public broadcasting reports on the rise of virtual assistants detailed last month.

These agents operate independently on remote servers rather than local devices. You assign it a role, essentially, said Francisco Cervera, a data scientist and co-founder of AI Launch, which builds AI agents for businesses, describing how the software functions over extended periods.

There’s something I want to do over a period of time, and it’ll just keep doing that.

Users have deployed the technology for various personal tasks. Meta suggests using Muse to cancel forgotten subscriptions, hunt for deals on Facebook Marketplace, dispute denied medical bills, track pet medications, gather quotes for home projects, monitor airfares, and build custom trivia games. Testing by Arizona’s Family showed that canceling subscriptions, collecting home project quotes, and monitoring flights generally received positive user marks, though features such as pet medication tracking and trivia generation lacked public reviews.

AI Agents Require Sensitive Personal Access

Granting an AI agent the capability to manage daily tasks requires handing over sensitive personal access. To organize an inbox, the software requires full access to emails; identifying subscriptions for cancellation necessitates sharing banking information, as noted in public broadcasting analysis of AI assistants.

Analysis highlights that these systems operate at a different scale compared to previous digital tools. Unlike simply tagging an individual in a photograph, an all-encompassing agent observes multiple facets of daily life and generates automated inferences about user behavior, purchasing preferences, and future activities.

Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse from making purchases on its website, while other retailers such as Chewy permit agent interaction.

Experts Recommend Gradual Adoption of Cloud Agents

Industry specialists recommend a gradual approach to adopting cloud agents to mitigate security risks and user hesitation. For somebody that is new to this, it is scary, Cervera noted, advising users that You don’t have to jump in all at once.

Experts suggest beginning with read-only permissions that allow assistants to summarize emails without sending messages. Users can then transition to draft-only permissions before granting autonomous execution rights. Cervera compares the configuration to adjustable mechanical controls, explaining that you’re adjusting that lever based on how much control you want to give these agents.

As these tools evolve, developers continue testing advanced communication features. Meta’s Muse includes a beta capability to place robocalls on a user’s behalf to resolve customer service inquiries, though the feature remains restricted and is not yet widely available to the general public.
